In the pursuit of safer, more efficient, and sustainable manufacturing, Danfoss announced a transformative upgrade in its production line: the implementation of laser welding technology.
For years, the soldering process for preheater pipes at Danfoss had relied on a high-temperature oven operating at 500°C. This method, while effective, came with significant drawbacks. It demanded an ATEX-certified environment due to the use of hydrogen and nitrogen gases, posing explosive risks and requiring highly trained personnel with annual safety certifications. The energy consumption and maintenance costs for this setup were significant and projected to rise further.
Recognizing the need for change, the engineering and production teams at Danfoss embarked on a journey to identify a safer, more cost-effective alternative. The result was a cutting-edge laser welding solution that not only met the technical requirements but also aligned with Danfoss’ long-term sustainability goals.
The new welding preheater machine was designed with an enclosed laser system, classified as Laser Safety Class 1, which eliminated the need for an ATEX environment. This shift dramatically reduced operational risks and simplified safety protocols, allowing Danfoss to streamline training and reduce dependency on hazardous gases.
Beyond safety, the benefits were substantial. The laser welding process consumed significantly less electricity, contributing to a notable reduction in energy costs. Maintenance requirements were minimal, and the system’s reliability ensured consistent performance with fewer interruptions. These improvements were expected to deliver a strong return on investment within just a few years.

"The transition to laser welding technology represents a major advancement in our production capabilities. Not only does it enhance safety and efficiency, but it also highlights our commitment to sustainable manufacturing solutions, reduces CO₂ emissions significantly, and contributes to engineering a better future," said Reza Abolhassani.
This project marks a pivotal moment in Danfoss' journey toward smarter manufacturing. It reflects their dedication to innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility, setting a new standard for building the future.
