Machining spool bores in hydraulic components requires tight tolerances and stable processes across multiple production stages. In this context, MAPAL expanded its tooling portfolio with new solutions for spool bore pre-machining, complementing its established fine machining capabilities for hydraulic applications.
Spool bore machining as a critical step in hydraulic production
Spool bores are functional features in hydraulic components such as valve housings and axial piston pumps, where dimensional accuracy and surface quality directly affect system performance. MAPAL has traditionally focused on fine boring tools for these applications and is extending its tooling scope to include pre-machining operations.
This expansion allows manufacturers to source tooling for multiple machining stages from a single supplier, supporting more consistent process coordination across the hydraulic component manufacturing workflow.
Pilot drilling strategies adapted to casting conditions
One of the new developments is a pilot drill designed to improve process efficiency by reducing machining steps and limiting tool changes. Two versions are available, with three or five cutting edges, to accommodate different casting conditions of raw components.
The three-edge design is intended for stable casting quality, while the five-edge version is designed for less stable or variable casting conditions. The latter supports higher feed rates and improved positional accuracy in more demanding machining scenarios.
By adapting tool geometry to casting characteristics, the tools are intended to provide more consistent pre-machining performance across varying raw material conditions.
Boring tool design focused on chip control and tool life
MAPAL also introduced a solid carbide boring tool with three cutting edges based on its patented multi-chamfer technology. This design supports controlled chip breaking and evacuation, reducing the risk of chip congestion during machining.
Internal coolant supply is integrated to support thermal stability and extend tool life, particularly during deep bore machining operations where heat management affects dimensional stability and process reliability.
The tool design also helps prevent the formation of casting rings that can lead to rejected parts during downstream machining processes.
Design features supporting deep bore machining
The tooling design supports drilling depths of up to 10×D, making it suitable for applications with demanding length-to-diameter ratios, such as large hydraulic valve housings.
The multi-chamfer geometry also supports tool regrinding, which can reduce tooling cost per bore over the product lifecycle. These features are intended to improve cost efficiency while maintaining process repeatability.
Coordinating pre-machining with downstream finishing processes
MAPAL’s tooling approach considers spool bore machining as a multi-stage process rather than isolated operations. The pre-machining tools are therefore designed to align with the requirements of subsequent finishing processes to support consistent dimensional results.
By extending its tooling range for pre-machining operations, MAPAL is positioning its offering around integrated machining process support for fluid power manufacturing, enabling coordinated tooling strategies across multiple production stages.
